HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR ELECTIONS
Does the kind of government we live under affect the way we live? Obviously, it does. Therefore, if we desire a good way of life, logic and self-interest indicate that we should inform ourselves prior to voting. We can look to the Word of God for all our answers in life for wisdom and guidance.
2 Timothy 2: 1-3 I exhort therefore that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
(remainder of November newsletter: below)
The scripture tells us the first thing we should do is to not turn on Fox News or look on the internet but to look to Him. We do that through prayer and through His Word. We know also that the founding fathers of our nation drew heavily from the scriptures in the process of creating our founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Although scripture is not necessarily quoted, its influence is felt. The Constitution conveys the scriptural sentiment that we as citizens of this nation may be able to lead a quiet and peaceable life insured by a good government.
So, what exactly is good government? Good government maintains law and order; it keeps communications open, preserves civil liberty and protects freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. It provides an environment in which the Gospel can be preached.
On the other hand, bad government allows the breakdown of law and order, permits unsafe travel conditions and poor communications and imposes unjust and arbitrary restrictions. Bad government hinders the effective preaching of the truth. At its worst, bad government suppresses the universal right of all men to believe in God and to express their faith by public worship and proclamation. We see these conditions in countries under communist rule today. Good government that allows freedom to worship is the will of God.
The majority of Christians do not pray seriously for good government with a scriptural conviction that it is God’s will. The truth is Christians are not exhorted to criticize their government but rather to pray for it. If Christians would seriously begin to intercede, they would soon find less to criticize.
In God’s dealings with nations, His promises of blessing and His warning of judgment are both alike: they are conditional. Judgment may be averted at the eleventh hour – by repentance. Conversely, blessing may be forfeited by disobedience. Today, God is speaking once again through His Spirit to cities and to nations. He is calling to repentance, to fasting, to self-humbling. Those who obey will receive the visitation of His mercy and those who reject will receive the visitation of His wrath.
Americans should ask of themselves this question: How many of the blessings and the privileges we now enjoy were obtained for us by the prayer of our leaders and governments in previous generations? Today, as we look back over more than three hundred and fifty years of American history, we form the impression of an elaborate pattern, woven out of threads of varying colors and textures. Throughout the length of the pattern, we may distinguish one thread of divine purpose. Each succeeding generation has been sustained and continued by the faith, prayers and fasting of like-minded believers.
As we approach this season of elections, the very survival of our nation may be in the balance. May we approach this privilege of electing our leaders looking to the Word of God, with prayer and with fasting seeking His guidance. Let us truly inform ourselves of the issues that are at stake and the solutions to those issues, not sound bites and talking points. Let us have discussions not arguments.
Joel 2:12 Therefore also now, says the Lord, turn to Me with all your heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning.
In hours of crisis such as this, prayer alone will not suffice. Prayer must be accompanied by repentance and fasting. Go to the polls prayerfully with a heart seeking His guidance and wisdom praying for His Name to be exalted in our nation once again.
If you have prayed this prayer, Welcome to the Family of God! We have a special gift for you.
